 Kindergarten Classroom Management Plan

Reflection:

Above is a picture of my Kindergarten Classroom Management Plan.  Our class rules were created by the students themselves on the first day of class. Having the students create the classroom rules gives them ownership of something in the classroom, and because they created the rules they will be more inclined to follow them. I purposely wrote all of the rules in a positive manner so that students thought more about what they COULD do in class, rather than what they COULDN'T do. The last rule is written negatively, only because the class voted and insisted that this be one of our classroom rules. Next to the rules is the incentive/behavior management plan. The students were given a gold star each morning, and after two warnings the child had to go and change the color of his star himself and explain why his star was being changed before he could take his seat. As the teacher, I never changed a star because I wanted the students to take responsibility for their own actions and understand that Ms. Scott was not changing their star because she was upset, but that they were told to change their star because they misbehaved. At the end of each day, I colored in a behavior square in their folders that they had to take home and get signed daily. Students quickly became acclimated to the consequences for misbehaving and they took changing their stars seriously. I even had one student throw a temper tantrum each time he was told to change his star because he wanted to remain a "Gold Star Student." This artifact reflects Standard Five: Motivation and Management because these rules and the behavior chart effectively helped create an environment that was very conducive to learning.
